LCR Hallcrest is a family owned pioneer of temperature sensitive, colour changing graphic technology and specialises in the formulation and microencapsulation of Liquid Crystal mixtures and the development and manufacture of thermometer labels, pigments, inks and paints that change colour.
For over 40 years Liquid Crystal has been used to monitor and communicate temperature and solve problems in a wide range of industrial, medical and food hygiene applications. The LCR Hallcrest name is synonymous with this effort and has been at the forefront of the innovation, development and manufacturing of products such as whimsical novelties like the mood ring of the 70’s, consumer products such as the battery testers, to medical diagnostic thermometers currently used in millions of surgeries annually.
Liquid crystals are chemical compounds and mixtures that exhibit the mechanical properties of liquids and the optical characteristics of solids. Liquid crystals that change colour with changes in temperature are known as thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC`s). Their scientific name is cholesteric liquid crystals. Microencapsulation is the process that is primarily used to stabilize and protect the liquid crystals. It also makes them easier to use.
